Sylfirm X is a radiofrequency microneedling device used to remodel scars, tighten skin, and treat redness and pigmentation. It combines fine needles with radiofrequency energy delivered at a controlled depth, and it is notable for being safe across all skin types. Sage Dermatology offers it at our clinic in downtown Toronto.
How it works
Insulated microneedles pass through the surface of the skin and release radiofrequency energy in the dermis. Because the energy is delivered below the surface rather than absorbed by pigment, the risk of the pigment changes that can follow laser treatment is very low. That is what makes it a first choice for medium and darker skin tones.
What it treats
- Acne scarring, particularly boxcar and rolling scars, usually as part of a combined plan.
- Skin laxity along the jawline, cheeks and neck, where it produces gradual tightening rather than a dramatic lift.
- Melasma and stubborn pigmentation, where many light-based treatments carry risk.
- Persistent redness and visible vessels.
- Enlarged-looking pores and texture.
What to expect
Numbing cream is applied for about 30 minutes. Treatment takes 30 to 45 minutes and feels like heat and pressure with a prickling sensation. Afterwards the skin is red and slightly swollen, similar to a sunburn, and most people are back to normal activity the next day with makeup if they wish.
Three to six sessions four to six weeks apart is typical. As with any collagen-based treatment, the result builds over three to six months rather than appearing immediately.
Sylfirm X or laser?
Both remodel collagen. Laser tends to do more for surface texture and sun damage; radiofrequency microneedling does more for laxity and carries less pigment risk. In practice the right answer depends on your skin tone, your scar type and how much downtime you can take, and it is often a combination. That assessment is what the consultation is for.
Cost and coverage
Cosmetic and not covered by OHIP. Cost depends on the area and number of sessions, confirmed at consultation. Receipts provided for health spending accounts.
