Benefits

  • Softens lines from facial movement

  • Treats jaw clenching and sweating

  • No downtime

Botox is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the muscle it is injected into. At Sage Dermatology in downtown Toronto, Botox injections are given by our physicians for frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet, jaw clenching and excess sweating. Appointments take about 30 minutes, and there is no downtime.

How Botox works

Lines such as frown lines and crow's feet form because of repeated muscle movement. Botox quiets that movement, so the lines soften and new ones are slower to form. Lines that are visible when your face is at rest are usually better treated with resurfacing or filler, and we will tell you if that applies to you. See our dermal filler and laser resurfacing pages.

Areas we treat

  • Frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet.
  • The masseter (jaw muscle). For clenching, grinding and jawline shape.
  • Underarms, hands and feet. For excess sweating. See hyperhidrosis.
  • Smaller areas. Neck bands, chin dimpling and a gummy smile, when suitable.

Your Botox consultation

We start with a short assessment of your face and your goals. We explain what Botox can and cannot do for your concern, where we would inject, and what to expect. If Botox is not the best option for you, we say so. New patients are offered a follow-up review at about two weeks.

What to expect

The injections cause brief stinging. No numbing is needed. Results begin in three to five days and are fully visible at about two weeks. They typically last three to four months. Most people go straight back to work. Avoid strenuous exercise and rubbing the treated areas for the rest of the day.

Risks

Bruising and a temporary headache are the most common effects. Brow or eyelid heaviness is uncommon and temporary. The physician reviews risks with you before treatment, including whether Botox is suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Cost and coverage

The cost depends on the areas treated and the amount needed, and it is confirmed at your consultation before any treatment. Cosmetic Botox is not covered by OHIP. Some medical uses, such as severe sweating, may be covered by private insurance, so check your plan.
