Forehead lines and the vertical lines between the brows form because of repeated muscle movement. At Sage Dermatology in downtown Toronto, our physicians use Botox (botulinum toxin type A) to relax those muscles so the lines soften and new ones are slower to form.
Why forehead and frown lines are treated together
The muscles that pull the brows down (between the eyebrows) and the muscle that lifts them (the forehead) work against each other. Treating the forehead alone can lower the brows and make the eyes look heavy. We assess both areas and plan the injections so the brow stays in a natural position.
What Botox can and cannot do
Botox works on lines caused by movement. Lines that are still visible when your face is at rest are usually better treated with resurfacing or filler, and we will tell you if that applies to you. See our dermal filler and laser resurfacing pages.
What to expect
The injections cause brief stinging. No numbing is needed. Appointments take about 30 minutes and there is no downtime. Results begin in three to five days and are fully visible at about two weeks. They typically last three to four months. Avoid strenuous exercise and rubbing the treated areas for the rest of the day. New patients are offered a follow-up review at about two weeks.
Risks
Bruising and a temporary headache are the most common effects. Brow or eyelid heaviness is uncommon and temporary. The physician reviews risks with you before treatment, including whether Botox is suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Cost and coverage
Botox is priced per unit. The number of units depends on the areas treated and the strength of your muscles, and frown lines and forehead lines together take more units than either alone. We confirm the number of units and the total cost at your consultation, before any treatment. Cosmetic Botox is not covered by OHIP.
