Benefits

  • Stimulates collagen production

  • Improves skin texture and tone

  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Microneedling uses a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, prompting the body to produce new collagen as it repairs. It is used mainly for texture, scarring and fine lines. Sage Dermatology performs microneedling at our clinic in downtown Toronto.

What it treats

  • Acne scarring, particularly shallow rolling and boxcar scars.
  • Texture and enlarged-looking pores.
  • Fine lines and early skin laxity.
  • Stretch marks and some surgical scars.

Because it does not rely on light or heat absorbed by pigment, microneedling is generally safe across all skin tones, which makes it a useful option where lasers carry more risk.

Microneedling, or radiofrequency microneedling?

Standard microneedling works mechanically. Radiofrequency microneedling, such as Sylfirm X, adds heat energy at depth and does considerably more for laxity and deeper scarring. If your main concern is mild texture, microneedling alone is reasonable and less expensive. If it is significant scarring or sagging, the radiofrequency version is a better use of your money, and we will say so.

A note on at-home rollers

Home devices either have needles too short to reach the depth that matters, or long enough to cause damage and infection when used without sterile technique. Neither is a substitute for in-clinic treatment, and we regularly see pigmentation and scarring caused by them.

What to expect

Numbing cream is applied for about 30 minutes, and treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards the skin is red and feels tight, similar to a moderate sunburn, settling over one to three days. Makeup can usually be worn after 24 hours.

A course of three to six sessions four to six weeks apart is typical, with results building over several months as collagen forms.

Cost and coverage
