Warts are small, noncancerous growths on the skin caused by a viral infection. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the hands, feet, and face.
Warts are contagious and can be spread through direct skin-to-skin contact or by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus. They can also be spread from one part of the body to another by scratching or picking at them.
Most warts are harmless and do not require treatment. However, some warts can be painful, unsightly, or interfere with daily activities. Warts on the feet can also cause discomfort or difficulty walking.
Treatment options for warts may include over-the-counter medications, prescription creams or gels, cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery (burning), or surgical removal. Your dermatologist can recommend the best treatment plan for your specific type and location of warts.
The best way to prevent warts is to avoid touching other people's warts, keep your skin clean and dry, wear shoes in public areas like pools and locker rooms, and avoid sharing personal items like towels and razors. If you do have warts, avoid scratching or picking at them to prevent spreading the virus to other parts of your body.
